TWD’s monopile gripper design played a pivotal role in the successful installation of the foundations of Jeonnam 1 offshore wind farm. Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries (HESI) and Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Co. Ltd have achieved a significant milestone in the realization of South Korea’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm. This project also marks TWD’s first completed venture in the South Korean offshore wind market.

To unlock the operational potential of the Hyundai Frontier a lightweight tailored monopile gripper was required. During transit, the gripper can be folded by a jacking system. This provides clearance around the monopile for the installation of the transition piece. Ultimately, the gripper is designed to work at Frontier’s keel level. This allows the system to guide and stabilize the piles until deeper penetration depths.

Locally manufactured
Due to the short lead time, TWD was in close contact with the South Korean manufacturer Sambo C.M.C. during the fabrication of the monopile gripper. To ensure delivery of the equipment to HESI within time and budget, TWD provided fabrication management, supporting Sambo C.M.C. with technical advice throughout the entire fabrication process. Together with Sambo C.M.C., TWD navigated challenges such as a tight fabrication schedule, limited material availability, and unexpected last-minute changes to the design.

Mr. CW Ju, project manager at HESI: “We are pleased with the successful installation of all foundations for Jeonnam 1. TWD’s expertise in gripper design and close collaboration with manufacturer Sambo C.M.C. played crucial role in this success. We look forward to continuing our partnership.”

Simon Lembrechts, Commercial Manager at TWD: “After building an extensive track record of offshore wind equipment worldwide, we are grateful to HESI for awarding us the design of the monopile gripper, marking TWD’s first project in South Korea. We are proud to have contributed to the realization of South Korea’s first commercial offshore wind farm Jeonnam 1 and push the sustainable solution forward.”

Asia Offshore Wind Day Busan: Attend Our Session on Installation and Transportation
As South Korea’s offshore wind sector gains momentum, TWD is intensifying its engagement in this dynamic market. On 3 September, we will host a session on Transport and Installation of Foundations at the 12th Asia Offshore Wind Day in Busan. This session will showcase cutting-edge techniques, practical case studies, and emerging trends that advance the feasibility of jacket foundation installation The event promises to be a key opportunity for networking and fostering discussions that will help shape the future of South Korea’s offshore wind industry.
