Tailored design of a monopile gripper on Aeolus
To install the Luchterduinen offshore wind farm, Van Oord had to transport and install 43 monopiles using their Aeolus vessel. To assist Van Oord with this project, TWD designed a tailored monopile gripper. Our teams made sure the gripper was versatile and could be used to install monopiles with a diameter of 6-8m. Additionally, deck interfaces were integrated in the vessel, resulting in an optimal gripper stiffness.
TWD was happy to see our design of the gripper contribute to the successful installation of the Luchterduinen OWF (129 MW), which annually provides 150.000 houses with green electricity.
Project highlights
As the global wind energy sector expands, a shortage of vessels for handling bigger monopiles is foreseen. Simply scaling up isn’t enough.
