Meeting Local Regulations With Efficient Transport Solutions
TWD is proud to have supported Van Oord in the successful installation of wind turbine generators (WTGs) for South Fork, New York’s first offshore wind farm. To comply with Jones Act regulations, Van Oord utilized a Crowley “feeder” barge to transport twelve 11 MW turbines from the quayside to the installation vessel, Aeolus.
TWD’s involvement played a key role in supporting Van Oord with multiple engineering scopes during this project. Our engineering team provided essential support throughout the development of the feeder operation, including the seafastening of the tower sections on both the feeder barge and Aeolus vessel. We developed an innovative quick-release system designed to facilitate the safe and efficient transfer of tower sections from the feeder barge to Aeolus.
Additionally, TWD designed and implemented the blade rack outriggers for the feeder barge. This enhancement significantly improved the operational efficiency of the entire transport and installation process, contributing to the overall success of the wind farm project.
