Pre-piling Template – Borkum West II

Foundation installation pre-piling template for the jack-up barge Goliath

TWD designed a piling template for DEME’s jack-up barge, Goliath. Suspended by winches and guided by the jack-up legs, this template can be easily lowered to the seabed and leveled during pile driving. To safely install the piles within the tight tolerances, the template contains a simple and robust mechanism that has been put in the sleeves. Because the mechanism can be hydraulically retracted, it allows the template to easily retrieve. The template is then lifted against the hull allowing the barge to easily sail to its next location.

Our design proudly contributed to the installation of Borkum West II offshore wind farm (400 MW) that provides 400.000 homes with green electricity every year.

Project highlights

  • The template assures accurate positioning of the piles throughout the entire piling campaign
  • Due to a smart and effective mechanical design, the template never gets stuck, works fast and accurately
  • Due to its simplicity, fabrication is cost-effective

As the global wind energy sector expands, a shortage of vessels for handling bigger monopiles is foreseen. Simply scaling up isn’t enough.
