Monopile Upend Hinge – Yunlin OWF Taiwan

Sapura Energy commissioned TWD to design an upend hinge, assisting monopile installation at Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm off the west coast of Taiwan. In this project, the upend hinge and the crane are not located on the same vessel. This results in relative motion between the crane vessel and the barge with the upend hinge.

Our mechanical team delivered a robust and lean design of the upend hinge that follows the motion of the monopile during the operation. The hinge can adapt to different water depths and monopile lengths, by retracting and extending the bottom beam.

Project highlights

  • First design package delivered 4 months after project kick-off.
  • Installed the world’s largest monopile at the time.
  • Adjustable to install different monopile lengths.

As the global wind energy sector expands, a shortage of vessels for handling bigger monopiles is foreseen. Simply scaling up isn’t enough.
