Seafastening Structures – Yunlin OWF

Seafastening structures, feasibility study, deck lay out study, motion and stability analysis

TWD was awarded the tailored design of the seafastening structures for the WTIV Blue Wind, a jack-up vessel owned by Shimizu Corp. TWD’s scope of work also included a feasibility study, deck layout study as well as a motion and stability analysis.

Initially, YWPC approached TWD to explore the feasibility of deploying the WTIV Blue Wind for the monopile installation works for the 2024 installation campaign. YWPC aimed to reuse both an Monopile Gripper and an Upending Hinge that were used during prior installation campaigns. However, as these components were originally tailored for the monopile installation from a floating vessel, this posed challenges due to excessive weight and size when adapting them for installation on board the WTIV Blue Wind. This challenge resulted in an extensive deck layout study by TWD.

Subsequently, TWD was tasked with designing seafastening structures for the WTIV Blue Wind. Close collaboration with YWPC was crucial throughout the project, especially given the short lead time for the design phase. The project demanded thorough material selection and a design to align with Asian fabrication standards, ensuring all components could be manufactured and assembled efficiently within the targeted timeframe.

After being tasked with the design of the seafastening components such as impact and vibro hammers as well as associated HPUs, YWPC expanded TWD’s scope as the project evolved. This included the design of supplementary elements such as chutes and container seafastenings, showcasing TWD’s flexibility. This project was executed by TWD’s office in Taiwan, offering local assistance to YWPC.

Project highlights:

  • Extensive deck layout
  • Thorough material selection to align with Asian standards
  • Local assistance by TWD Taiwan office

As the global wind energy sector expands, a shortage of vessels for handling bigger monopiles is foreseen. Simply scaling up isn’t enough.
