Sheet Piling Gate for Flood Defence Wall Installation – Waterford
Tailored solution for efficient installation of complex sheet pile alignments
TWD supported BAM Civil Ltd (BAM) in the installation of a c.900 m flood defence wall in Waterford, Ireland, developed as part of a public infrastructure project to protect the adjacent railway line. The structure consists of AZ sheet piles of varying lengths and includes multiple angular direction changes along its alignment, adding complexity to the installation process.
Working closely with the BAM team, TWD developed a tailored sheet piling gate to support efficient and controlled installation. Building on an existing TWD piling tool concept, the system was specifically adapted to the project requirements, with a focus on reducing working time and increasing the daily installation rate.
The resulting design is a weight-optimized piling gate system that anchors onto previously installed sheet piles using a dual-level, hydraulically actuated clamp. This setup compensates for height variations between installed piles, ensuring stable and continuous support throughout the installation sequence.
A key feature of the system is its opening and closing gate mechanism, which enables the installation of sheet piles at angles of up to 90 degrees relative to the existing alignment. This allows BAM to navigate sharp directional changes without interrupting the installation process or compromising stability.
In addition, the gate’s arm configuration provides safe and efficient operator access for cutting piles to length after driving. The rear of the system incorporates dedicated space for the safe landing of an operator man basket, further supporting safe and practical on-site operations.
